Others have noted if u were to replace with something other then oem the damping system would go haywire not being plugged in an all kinds of lights would come on.

With a COLD engine, unscrew the radiator cap and see if there is any brownish or other colored sludge looking deposits. Check in the bottom of the coolant res too.
